 Smokey quartz can vary between a brownish grey to a darker , almost black shade. It is a silicon dioxide crystal. The characteristic smokey colour is due to free silicon formed from the silicon dioxide by a natural irradiation process. In healing circles, Smoky quartz is believed to be a grounding, protective and generally detoxifying crystal, with a connection to mother earth. It is linked to the lower chakras.
