Jurassic Pyritized Ammonite ; Quenstedtoceras in Acrylic Collectors Box x 1
Fossil ammonite; Quenstedoceras .The ammonite is pyritized , giving them a shiny metallic appearance . This is sometimes referred to as fools gold, as it could be mistaken for gold. When the fossil is first buried, millions of years ago, sulphate plays a part in causing this process called perimineralization. The presence of iron in the sediment oxidises into pyrite and produces this attractive effect.
