Fossil Stromatolite Lulworth Dorset UK with Display Stand
Polished on both ends but rest of specimen left rough. From Robert Stout collection.Stromatolites are were microbial, being one of the earliest records of life. The earliest known stromatolites are 3.5 to 2.75 billion years old. This was known as the Precambrian period. Stromatolites are layered, and developed as a result of microbial mats which developed as sediment became part of its matrix. Blue -green algae in these early deposits formed colonies which played a large part in creating the oxygen in the atmosphere.. These younger stromatolites may have originated from prokaryotic and eukaryotic organsims , rather than from algae blooms.
