Devonian Fossil Crinoid ( Sea Lilly) Cupressocrinites from Morocco with Stand
Rare to Acquire Fossil Crinoid ; Scyphocrinites Sea Lilly" with Lobolith + display stand
A Crinoid was a marine animal, rather than a plant .This is a rare to acquire specimen -Lobilith or Crinoid bulb fossil. Crinoids or Sea Lillies" generally had a root system which held them to the sea floor. A small number of species actually floated with the currents rather than being actually connected to anything. As far as I can tell, this is a lobolith from a Scyphocrinites crinoid, possibly Elegans. The sac or lobolith would have been filled with gas , helping it to float. It enabled the crinoid to hang upside down and thus reach food matter, which would have given it an advantage over other crinoid species. The specimen shows some very good detail and preservation. I have not been able to find any more since I purchased this directly from the Moroccan seller while I was at the famous Saint Marie Aux Mines fossil show. Traces of other crinoids on reverse.
