Fossil Crinoid Calyx Silurian Wrens Nest Dudley UK

Crinoids are also commonly known as sea lillies. Crinoids are marine animals that make up the class Crinoidea of the echinoderms (phylum Echinodermata). Crinoidea comes from the Greek word krinon, "a lily", and eidos, "form". They live both in shallow water and in depths as great as 9,000 meters (30,000 ft).Sea lilies refer to the crinoids which, in their adult form, are attached to the sea bottom by a stalk. Feather stars or comatulids refer to the unstalked forms.

The area around Dudley, particularly the Wren's Nest National Nature Reserve, is renowned for its rich fossil deposits, primarily from the Silurian period, which dates back around 428 to 423 million years ago.

The stems and calyxes of crinoids are commonly found in the Wren's Nest, showcasing the diversity of ancient marine life.Silurian, Wenlock Series.
